These golden, crispy rings are a gluten free snack the whole family will love. The breading is so easy that all parents have to do is fry them!

Celiac Disease is estimated to affect over 3 million people. That is to say nothing of the millions of other people affected by milder forms of gluten intolerance. Adults who are trying to live gluten free often have a difficult time dealing with their limited food options.

Kids with Celiac Disease often feel as if they are missing out on the “fun foods”. They don’t get to enjoy most of the snacks and finger foods that other kids do.

Gluten Free Onion Rings make a great snack or side dish that you can store in the freezer and have on hand when you need them, or the kids want them.

Part of the fun of this gluten free recipe for kids is that you can pick the onions you like best. Try using mild red onions, sweet yellow onions, spicy white onions or any others you can think of. Try mixing several varieties into the same batch for a flavor grab bag.

Spend an afternoon with your child preparing this easy to make gluten free recipe. Make several batches at one time and store them in your freezer. Every time you pop a Gluten Free Onion Ring in your mouth, you’ll be glad you did!

Materials You’ll Need

  • 3 forks
  • 2 large zip top freezer bags
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 cookie sheet lined with waxed paper

Ingredients for Gluten Free Onion Rings

  • 6 large onions
  • 1/2 c. gluten free all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbs. water
  • 1 c. gluten free corn-flake crumbs
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Preparation Procedure for Gluten Free Onion Rings

  1. Put gluten free all purpose flour and salt into one zip top bag. Shake to combine.
  2. Put gluten free corn-flake crumbs and pepper into second zip top bag and shake to combine.
  3. Beat eggs and water in bowl.
  4. Slice onions into 1/4 inch slices and separate into rings.
  5. Drop rings into the zip top bag containing flour and salt.
  6. Seal bag with the air still inside and shake until all rings are lightly coated with flour.
  7. Using a fork, remove several rings from bag, gently shaking off excess flour.
  8. Dip rings in egg mixture with a separate fork until fully coated.
  9. Move rings from egg mixture to the zip top bag containing gluten free corn-flake crumbs and pepper. Shake to coat.
  10. Using a dry fork, remove the rings from the bag and gently shake to remove excess breading.
  11. Place rings on cookie sheet lined with waxed paper.
  12. Repeat steps 7-11, coating rings in batches of 4-6 rings at a time, until all rings are coated. Rings can be stacked in layers on cookie sheet with waxed paper in between each layer.
  13. When all rings are breaded, place cookie sheet in freezer and allow Gluten Free Onion Rings to freeze. About four hours to overnight.
  14. Once rings are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container for storage. Gluten Free Onion Rings will stay fresh in freezer for up to 4 months.

If you prefer spicy Gluten Free Onion Rings, substitute 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper for the black pepper to turn up the heat.
